Gertrud Sobye - Rotary Youth Exchange Program
Tru is our Rotary International Youth Exchange Student for this Rotary year. Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) is a Rotary International student exchange program for students in secondary school. Since 1929, Rotary International has sent young people around the globe to experience new cultures. Currently, about 9,000 students are sponsored by Rotary Clubs every year.
Tru gave a wonderful speech about her life back home in Denmark.
A few highlights about Tru: She loves the ocean, surfing, her friends and family, sports and holds her Danish traditions close to her heart.

A few examples are:
  • New Year's- actually jumping off chairs into the New year and doing pranks.
  • Don't be Single if you are 25 years old or they kidnap you and tie you to a pole and throw eggs and cinnamon 2 you?? (Editors note: “A Danish man told The Telegraph that the tradition may date back hundreds of years to when spice salesmen would travel around and remain bachelors because they were never in one place long enough to settle down with someone.  This makes sense on your 30th birthday, where the cinnamon gets upgraded to pepper. If they're feeling super mean, Danes sometimes add eggs to the mix because it “helps with adhesion.”)
  • JDay- 1st Friday in Nov- considered Beer Day where people fill the streets and drink. (Editors Note: “J-Day,” is rarely a quiet one on the streets of Copenhagen, Denmark. At the strike of 8:59 pm, residents await the annual delivery of Tuborg’s Julebryg Christmas ale, a seasonal licorice-infused strong dark pilsner.)
Tru expressed her love of the Royal Family and in particular their Queen.

Tru would love to visit a few locations or do a few things in Canada still so if you are attending any of these things- please keep her in mind:
  • Montreal
  • Quebec City
  • Ottawa- wants to skate on the canal)
  • Snow Mobile
  • Go Sailing or anything else you may be attending.
Gertrud, thank you for your presentation and for being such an excellent ambassador for your country.
